Is that before or after tax?

Before tax. Take-home depends on your state, filing status, pre-tax deductions and credits, so any single net figure would be wrong for most people who read it.

What if I do not get paid time off?

The 2080-hour convention assumes your holiday is paid. If you take two unpaid weeks, you work 2,000 hours, so the same annual figure implies a higher hourly rate, and the same hourly rate implies a lower annual total.

$40 an hour is how much a year?

$40.00 an hour is $83,200 a year.

Before tax, based on a 40-hour week and 2,080 paid hours a year.

The full breakdown

Hourly	$40.00
Daily (8 hours)	$320.00
Weekly	$1,600
Every two weeks	$3,200
Monthly	$6,933
Yearly	$83,200

Is that what lands in your account?

No. Every figure above is gross. What you actually take home depends on your state, your filing status, pre-tax deductions like 401(k) and health premiums, and any credits you qualify for. Those swing the answer by thousands, which is why there is no net number on this page: a single take-home figure would be wrong for most people reading it.

What changes the number

Unpaid time off. The 2,080-hour convention quietly assumes your holiday is paid. Take two unpaid weeks and you work 2,000 hours, so $83,200 a year works out to $41.60 an hour instead.
Part-time hours. At 30 hours a week the year is 1,560 hours, so the same hourly rate of $40.00 is $62,400 a year.
Overtime. Hourly roles paid time-and-a-half past 40 hours can clear the salaried equivalent, which is worth doing the arithmetic on before assuming salaried is the better offer.
Pay period. Semi-monthly (24 pay periods) and biweekly (26) are not the same. Biweekly gives you two months a year with three paychecks, which is the same money arriving on a different rhythm.

Converting the number is the easy part. The harder question is whether $40.00 an hour is the right rate for your role and location. The best guide is the pay employers post on listings for jobs like yours. The salary calculator only gives a rough rule-of-thumb range from your experience and location, not market data.
